106. Who Gets Priority to Lead the Davening at Omud on a Yahrtzeit?
There is a whole section in halacha dedicated to the dinei kedima, the order of priority, in a case where two men have a right to lead the davening at the omud, since both have yahrtzeit both wish to get an aliya, or both have to say Kaddish in places where only one person can say Kaddish at a time. There is a "chart" that lists all the applicable halachos in these various scenarios. According to many poskim a member of the shul takes precedence. For example, if two people have yahrtzeit, and only is a paying member, he would get priority. It is important to keep in mind that poskim say that one should not fight about any such mitzvah. It is a greater aliyas haneshomo, a greater elevation for the soul of the departed, if the person gives in rather than fights in order to lead the davening at the omud.
