Can Prostate or Bladder Surgery Pose a Halachic Problem?

Certain types of surgery raise serious halachic issues. For example, if a man has chas vesholom been diagnosed with a condition for which a doctor recommends prostate or bladder surgery, a consultation should take place between his doctor and a competent rav to ensure that he receives the best possible medical treatment, while at the same time making sure that any surgery to his procreative organs is done in a manner that is halachically permissible. The halachah is that a man may not put himself in a situation which will make him a petzua daka or a krus shafchah (various abnormalities of the male genitalia). Such a person may not enter bikhal Hashem—he may not marry or remain married to a woman who was born Jewish. The doctor and the rav should come to a meeting of minds and work out a plan to achieve the desired results in the best possible manner. #437
