#146 Work Given to a Kablan over Shabbos
We are permitted to give an item to a non-Jew to repair for us over Shabbos, if 1) he is a kablan, a contractor, who is paid by the job, and not by the hour, 2) we do not instruct him to do the repair on Shabbos, 3) we give him enough time to complete the job either before or after Shabbos, and 4) he is not doing the work in a Jewish home. If all these conditions are met, and again as mentioned, if he is paid a set price which is agreed upon in advance or there is a customary price for this type of job, it is permissible. This is because it is as if he is working for himself and not working for the Jew; he can do the job whenever he wishes to, and if he does it on Shabbos it is only for his own convenience and not at the Jew’s behest.
