Learning Halachah Takes Priority
Learning halachah le’maaseh has a din kedimah: practical halachah takes precedence over any other form of Torah learning. This applies to women as well, with focus on halachos that are relevant to them. A person who is not capable of learning much Torah should focus on studying halachah le’maaseh, practical laws, in order to become knowledgeable in basic halachos and know which issues require consulting a rav. It’s also not practical to be constantly asking she’ailos, questions, from a rav. Fulfilling mitzvos properly is incumbent upon every Jew, and is only possible by learning halachah le’maaseh, specifically Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim, the section that deals with day-to-day life, parts of Yoreh De’ah, and some of Even HaEzer and Choshen Mishpat. Even one who has the time and is capable of learning Torah should constantly review the sections dealing with halachah le’maaseh. It is written in the name of the Baal Shem Tov that the yetzer harah tries to trick us from keeping mitzvos, but doesn’t attempt to dissuade us from learning Torah altogether, knowing that we would most certainly refuse; instead the yetzer harah suggests we learn Gemarah or other materials which are not practice-oriented in order to keep us from learning Shulchan Aruch and knowing what to do and what not to do.
