Backing out from an agreement is Halachically very complicated. In most circumstances, it is forbidden to back out from an agreement to purchase an item, even if one found it for cheaper elsewhere. In some cases, money can be collected by the seller or employee from the potential buyer or employer who broke the agreement. For example, depending on what type of employee they are and whether they have already begun the work can affect the ability to collect funds. Promising to buy an item from a store is also considered an agreement. One may not back out, although generally speaking, the seller cannot charge the person money for backing out from their commitment to buy an item, unless specific expenses were incurred to order that item expressly for them.
