#141 Correct Spelling of Names
When naming a child or choosing a name, one should find out its halachically correct spelling, which can be found in the Shulchon Aruch in the laws of Gitin, the laws of divorce. There is a section in halachah dedicated to sheimos anashim v’nashim, names of men and women, as well as names of cities, and the spelling depends on whether the name is in Hebrew, Yiddish, or another language. For example, a name may be spelled with or without a vov. How a person signs their name is usually irrelevant, but it is occasionally taken into account. The correct spelling of a name has particular relevance in case of divorce, rachmana litzlan, because if even one letter is not correct, it could make the get, bill of divorce, invalid.
