Dropping Off Your Shaimos in Shul

Dropping off Shaimos in Shul

Putting shaimos (holy text or sefarim) into genizah (a place where shaimos are stored and subsequently buried according to the prescribed halachic guidelines), or having someone pick them up and put them into genizah on their behalf, can be quite expensive. Consequently, some people bring their shaimos to shul and leave them there, expecting the shul to pay for putting their sheimos into genizah. Doing so is against halachah, unless a person has explicit reshus (permission) from the gaboim to do so.

However, there is no problem if a person picks up a Torah pamphlet in shul and puts it back, either after studying it or after taking it home. If they had not have taken it, the shul would have had to pay for putting it into genizah anyway. #431
