Laws of Nursing

Halachos of Nursing

It is permissible for a woman to say Tehillimdaven (pray), and learn Torah while nursing a child—as long as she is properly covered. However, she should not bentch (say Birchas Hamazon, the Grace after Meals), nor daven Shemonei Esrei (the Amidah), but wait until after she has finished nursing to do so. Bedieved (after the fact), if she bentched or davened Shemonei Esrei while she was nursing, she has fulfilled her obligation and does not have to repeat it. A child who is old enough to say brochos should make a brachah before nursing. The child is allowed to make the brachah even if they see their mother uncovered. In the absence of another place to nurse, especially when done for modesty reasons, a mother may nurse her child in the bathroom. If she has no other place to nurse, a woman may also nurse in the ladies’ section of a Shul, even during davening, provided she is completely covered in a tzniusdik  (modest) manner.  #366?1
