May I call my Son Avremil?

May I Call my Son “Avremel”?

The Gemara says, “Hakorei l’Avraham Avram, over b’asei.” If someone calls Avraham Avinu by the name Avram—which was his name before Hashem told him, “Lo yikorei od es shimcha Avram,” (No longer will you be called Avram)—violates a mitzvas asei (positive commandment); according to another opinion, a lav (negative commandment). Many poskim do not quote this halachah; however, it is codified in the Magen Avraham and many later Torah sources. Therefore, one should not use the short version “Avram”, but should enunciate “Avraham” correctly. There is a discussion among poskim whether this halachah applies to others with that name, as it is after all the same name as Avraham Avinu’s. It is therefore preferable not to call someone named Avraham by the name Avram; however, using a nickname, such as Avremel or Avremi, is permissible since one is obviously not referring to Avraham Avinu. #326
