Must I let a Kohen go before me on the Line?

Honoring a Kohen

There is a mitzvas asei in the Torah of “Vekidashto” to sanctify Kohanim, which means to honor them. We fulfill this mitzvah by giving them precedence over others with regard to mitzvos: It is a mitzvah to give a Kohen the honor of leading the birchas hamazon (the Grace after Meals). (However, if there is someone present who is a greater talmid chacham, Torah scholar, than the Kohen, the talmid chacham should lead the bentching.) If two people who are equally suited both wish to daven at the amud, the Kohen should be given priority. Among other ways to honor a Kohen is to serve him food first. If we are standing in line in front of a Kohen, it is a special mitzvah to let the Kohen go first, unless we are pressed for time and being delayed will be a problem. If, however, by letting the Kohen go ahead of us other people who are behind us in the line will have to wait longer, we may not do so (unless with their permission). #282?1
