Lego on Shabbos

Building with Blocks on Shabbos

Building is forbidden on Shabbos, as it is one of the 39 melachos, the melachah of boneh. Building blocks, Lego, Magna Tiles, and other similar building toys, are of course, discouraged for use by adults, as adults should spend their Shabbos learning Torah and not playing with toys. Regarding children, if they are under the age of chinuch, playing with any of these toys does not present a problem. There is a difference of opinion amongst poskim regarding which of these toys children who have reached the age of chinuch—but are under Bar or Bas Mitzvah—may play with on Shabbos. The consensus is that Lego, which is relatively difficult to put together—especially the very small pieces—as the upper blocks need to be pushed onto the dowels on the lower ones with some force, should not be played with on Shabbos.  As a rule, blocks that are meant to be left in place for a while and not taken apart soon after completion should not be played with. However, the larger Legos, Magna Tiles, and building blocks may be played with on Shabbos. #251?1
