Torah in Bathroom or Bath House

Where Not to Speak Words of Torah

One may not speak, or even think, words of Torah while in a bathroom, bathhouse, or in a place where there is excrement or urine; we many not even think about halachos pertaining to the bathroom. Speaking in lashon hakodesh, the holy tongue, is permissible in such places if one is not saying words of Torah, but it is a midas chassidus, pious behavior, not to do so. Poskim suggest that in order to refrain from thinking Torah thoughts while in the bathroom, one should think about one’s financial accounts; on Shabbos when we may not think about such matters, one should think about beautiful buildings, landmarks, or other points of interest to take one’s mind off matters of Torah. Hashem’s Name, in any language, may not be said in a bathroom, bath house, or other unclean place. If a person notices an individual doing something halachically forbidden in such a place, they may tell them the halachah in order to stop them, and it would not be considered speaking words of Torah in a place where they should not be spoken.
