Gloves on Shabbos

Gloves on Shabbos

The halachah in Shulchan Aruch is that gloves may be worn on Shabbos even in a place where one is not permitted to carry. Gloves are considered a proper malbush, garment, which may be worn like any other garment. However, there is an opinion that suggests that one should not wear gloves outdoors on Shabbos due to the risk of taking them off while outside (in order to use one’s hands freely, or to scratch oneself) and transgress the isur, prohibition, of carrying on ShabbosPoskim say, “Ra’oui lachush”, it is advisable to consider this opinion and not wear gloves on Shabbos. If one wishes to wear gloves on Shabbos, they should tie them with a proper knot to a garment or sew them to a garment. In the olden days, there was a tube-like hand warmer called a muff into which both hands were placed; that style is halachically preferable to be used on Shabbos in a place where there is no eiruv, but even regarding a muff it is a good idea to be machmir, stringent. However, if it is very cold, there is more room for leniency for a muff than for regular gloves. There is no distinction in this halachah between men and women.
