Simchas Chasan V'Kallah

Being Mesameiach Chosson V’Kallah

We need to be mindful that the reason for attending a wedding is to be mesameiach the chosson and kallah, to bring joy to the groom and the bride. When we are nehene mi’seudas chosson, personally benefiting by partaking of the wedding meal, it’s incumbent upon us to reciprocate by being mesameiach chosson v’kallah. There are many ways to fulfill this mitzvah: being mesameaich be’dvarim, telling the chosson and kallah things that will add to their happiness, by serving them food and drink, and by singing and dancing for the chosson or kallah. When an adam chashuv, a prominent person attends the wedding it adds to their simchah. One’s presence at the wedding, and even just coming by to say mazel tov, often enhances their simchah, since a larger crowd encourages the band to play better and the guests to dance more—and that too is a way of performing the mitzvah.
